"Site is a word that has a fundamental importance in architecture. Site is where architecture begins. It is the starting point of all building and design activity, the place where architecture interacts with the world and where the world interacts with architecture." - Peter Zumthor
The above famous words came to mind when seeing the Sunnyside site for the first time. Mind starts projecting fictional images (or images of future?), combining with apparent openness of the valley ahead, calm yet aware and alive - a truly special place!
The design taps into natural characteristics of the place with restricted buildable area. The edge of escarpment invites to peek over into the bushland below, only to realize the drop of severe consequence. An open L shape is a natural response to site conditions, articulated with sweeping slabs set floating high above the valley. Have I mentioned the views...
The robust natural palette of external and internal finishes has been selected to complement the location, including horizontal slabs in off-form concrete, elongated bricks sourced locally in Australia, and a healthy quantity of spotted gum hardwood for the interior. This home fuses the most contemporary living with traditional elements (outdoor onsen style bath) into a design that will stand the test of time.
Whilst I have nurtured lovingly Sunnyside cr project since its conception, my work has been conducted as an employee and so the credit also goes to the whole team of Platform Architects, company holding all intellectual property rights of this design.
