As an architect and seasoned beach volleyballer, I was approached with a brief to design state-of-the-art multi sport facility with main focus to host large sporting and culture/entertainment events in vacant parklands not far from Sydney CBD. The conceptual study was developed to gauge political support, which - at the time - it seemed there were favourable winds blowing.
Facilities of this kind often tend to create ghost towns during quiet periods (think olympic village in Athens). Ad Astra was designed as a lively, self sufficient venue with solid underlying business plan relying on multiple revenue streams, including short term accommodation, ensuring the daily buzz.
